1. Gurame Indonesian Restaurant

Posted by Gurame Indonesian Restaurant on Sunday, 14 November 2010
Gurame Indonesian Restaurant is located on Changi Coast Walk and serves authentic Indonesian cuisine, with a seaside setting. And since it is on Changi Coast Walk, you can enjoy the views of the ocean and the aeroplanes that fly past, every ten minutes because it is so close to Singapore’s Changi Airport. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating and I would recommend sitting outside, especially during the evenings because that’s when you can enjoy the amazing views of the sunset and the evening breeze!
Food wise, the restaurant is known for their speciality, Gurame Goreng, which is a type of fish, mainly popular in Indonesia. Although the food is kind of on the expensive side, the ambience and quality definitely make the trip worthwhile. The venue is also a little difficult to access. The best way is to take a train to Tanah Merah MRT Station and take a short taxi ride from there!

2. Tang Tea House
Probably the most well known Halal dim sum place, in Singapore, Tang Tea House has three locations in the city, Simpang Bedok, Jalan Kayu and Jurong West. Selling a wide range of Chinese, Cantonese and Hainanese cuisine, Tang Tea House is definitely a go-to place for Muslims. Their restaurant at Simpang Bedok is much bigger than the one in Jalan Kayu and Jurong West, so if you’re with a large group, Bedok is definitely the recommended location. Also, the Bedok outlet is closer to the airport.
Must-try menu items include the famous Hainanese Chicken Rice (because what’s a trip to Singapore if you’re not going to eat chicken rice), Special Fried Beehoon (a fried vermicelli dish and in this case, one of the restaurant’s specialities), and of course, the dim sum. The dim sum served here comes with generous fillings and at affordable prices!

3. Hajah Maimunah Restaurant
Ask any Singaporean where to get the best Kampung-style Malay food and the answer you will get is the Hajah Maimunah Restaurant. This restaurant has been around for almost 20 years and serves traditional Kampung-style cuisine. They have been featured in the media several times, including on celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain’s television show. They are located in Kampung Glam, a place where the Malay culture of Singapore is the most vibrant. The area is also home to the very famous and historical Sultan Mosque.
Must-try menu items include the Tahu Telur (soft beancurd dish dressed with peanut sauce and vegetables), Ayam Lemak Chilli Padi (a spicy chicken dish with coconut gravy), Lemak Siput (snails in coconut milk), Ayam Bakar Padang (grilled chicken) and Ox-tail soup. These dishes can be a tad spicy but they are guaranteed to be very tasty!

They’re located in Simpang Bedok and they are a good place for a good supper because they sell everything! Besides Bedok, they also have an outlet at River Valley and they sell a wide range of delicacies from Thai, Indian, Malay, and Western and at reasonable prices for large portions.
One of my favourite things to eat at Spize is their bangers and mash, which is a sausage platter with a side of mash potatoes. Other must-try menu items include the Thai pineapple rice, mee goreng (Malay fried noodle dish) and the steak and murtabak (Indian stuffed meat pancake dish).

But what if you’re looking for Halal Mexican cuisine? Well, head down to Afterwit for generous portions of tacos, burritos and everything else Mexican. It is located on the very bustling North Bridge Road, just a short walk away from the Sultan Mosque. The owners of this cafe also own the very famous Working Title, that is located nearby, as well. Also, there aren’t many Mexican eateries in Singapore, much less Halal ones, which made Afterwit famous very quickly and they are almost always fully booked!
They offer a wide variety of classic Mexican dishes and beverages. The must-try menu items include the carne asada tacos, nachos Pancho de Pollo Cajún and the Pato Jarabe de Arce burrito. Their burritos are their main attraction, especially when they come in sizes bigger than your palm and paired with sides, so huge.

7. Le Steak
We can clearly conclude that the best Halal food is mostly located in either Jalan Kayu or Simpang Bedok. For a Halal and hearty steak, head over to Jalan Kayu for Le Steak by Chef Amri, one of the most famous places to go for Halal steak. The restaurant was opened by the celebrity chef, Chef Amri, and serves up generous portions of western cuisine with steaks as the main star. The steaks here are perfectly done and come in huge portions paired with delicious sides, ensuring that your stomach is fully content. Also, the restaurant is very well known and not only to the Malay community in Singapore, so expect large crowds, especially during the weekends!
At reasonable prices, the menu items at Le Steak will not disappoint. Dishes such as grilled fish and chicken and aglio olio are definitely must-tries. They also serve live oysters, flown in from Canada weekly and only available from Fridays to Sundays and desserts, such as Belgian waffles with ice cream, lemon curd tarts and crème brûlée.

Trust me when I say that Singaporeans love seafood. In fact, almost every hawker centre or food court will have at least one seafood stall. However, finding Halal seafood can prove to be a feat. But with Cajun On Wheels, gone are the days when Singaporeans have to travel across the Causeway to Johor Bahru to feast on seafood. Cajun On Wheels serves up buckets of seafood dressed with seasoning and sauces that cater to local taste, such as the chilli egg sauce, salted egg yolk sauce, and sambal belachan. The buckets are filled with many different kinds of seafood, such as mussels, prawns, crayfish and much more.
You can choose your type of seafood bucket and the kind of sauce you want it to be paired with. The seafood buckets will also include chicken spam, baby potatoes, and corn!
