Shimane Prefecture is home to Izumo Temple, a sacred marriage site in Japan. It’s also where you’ll find Tamatsukuri Onsen, located in Hoshino Resorts KAI Izumo and famous for its skin-beautifying hot spring water. Guests are sure to have a luxurious experience, bathing in the hot springs, strolling through the quaint onsen village, and experiencing Izumo, where ancient gods are said to gather.

Completely tucked away; experience the best in traditional Japanese hospitality

Guests arriving at the hotel can catch their breath and enjoy a complimentary beverage before heading to their rooms. The lobby overlooks a garden bursting with green foliage, giving visitors an idea of just how secluded the hotel is. Croaking frogs can be heard in the garden depending on the season. Now, settle in and get used to the slow pace of life here.

Any guests staying at the resort can enjoy traditional matcha green tea at the tea shop Ameian from 3:30 to 6:30PM daily. Even those with no knowledge of the art of making matcha and those unfamiliar with how to enjoy it are welcome to try!

Guests don’t need to be concerned about sitting in seiza, a formal Japanese posture, and can enjoy their tea leisurely. Be sure to pay attention to the drawings etched on the teacups as they feature famous places in Izumo. The sites, history, and traditions of Izumo are brought to life as you enjoy your matcha. Japanese sweets are served alongside the tea, which is prepared by a tea ceremony master.

Treasure this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

One of the most enticing features about Hoshino Resorts KAI Izumo is the rotenburo (traditional outdoor bath) accessible from each of the guest rooms. Guests can enjoy fully private baths made of Japanese cypress or shigaraki, a traditional ceramic material made from fired clay. There are also shower and bathing facilities inside the room for those who wish to bathe inside. Get the luxury of Izumo’s famous spring water all to yourself, in complete privacy.

Both the indoor and outdoor private baths are spacious, and perhaps as a result, the large public baths are often empty. If you’re lucky, you can enjoy it all to yourself. Gaze at the moon in the evenings and take a cup of sake with the gods of Izumo. Tsukimi-zake, a special type of sake to be enjoyed while viewing the moon, is available from 3:00PM to 10:00PM. Having a cup of this under the stars is the recommended way to get the most out of your bathing experience.

Guests are given a bath facial kit at check-in, which is definitely worth trying and is sure to leave you with exceptionally smooth skin the next day.

After finishing in the bath, guests can enjoy lemon flavored water and old-fashioned Japanese ice cream sweets, and have a quick massage in the massage chairs looking out at the bamboo forest. All of these amenities are provided to guests free of charge; everything is included in the room rate.

With a paper lantern hand, put on your geta (traditional Japanese footwear) and take an evening stroll.

At Hoshino Resorts KAI Izumo, geta and chochin (paper lanterns) are prepared for guests who wish to walk about at night. Strike out wearing nothing but your yukata robe. During the day, you might spot younger guests having fun in the quaint hot spring village, but at night, the atmosphere is much more quiet and relaxed. The light of your lantern and the sound made by your geta create a great sensory experience.

The Tamatsukuri Onsen area is filled with oshiroi jizo, buddha statues symbolic of cosmetic beauty, and wishing stones — plenty of spots for the ladies to relax and reflect. There’s a bridge of love, a wishing stone, and a blue agate said to bring happiness. But there’s only one place you can get a take-home bottle of the famous bihada-no-yu onsen water – Yukusushi Hiroba (Taira-yu).

Here, guests can purchase a spray bottle of hot spring water for 200JPY to take home with them. Maintain skin tone and moisture by spraying this water on your face and using it similar to a lotion. It’s good for removing dead skins cells.

One bottle is expected to last about five days. Use it all over your body and turn yourself into a true beauty of Izumo! The bottles also make great souvenirs.

Bihada-no-yu hot spring water and Japanese omotenashi hospitality await at Hoshino Resorts Kai Izumo

The colorless, odorless, clear-running water is the defining feature of Tamatsukurionsen, the most famous place in Shimane, located just an hour from Izumo Temple by car. It is even mentioned in the fudoki (ancient records of provincial Japanese culture, geography, and oral traditions) for the Izumo Region and in “The Pillow Book”, a famous work by court lady Sei Shonagon completed in year 1002. The time you spend here is sure to be special; the bihada-no-yu water has been famous since ancient times. Overflowing with luxurious food and generous hospitality, Hoshino Resorts KAI Izumo is the perfect place to treat yourself.
