The Regional Park of the Simbruini Mountains is a large natural area located between Lazio and Abruzzo, two regions of Italy.
The Simbruini name comes from the Latin “sub imbribus”, which means “under the rain”. Thanks to the proximity to Rome these mountains are also called, “Rome’s Alps”.
In this area, archaeologists have found fossils dated back to more than 5 million years ago. In fact, a tropical ocean called “Tethys” existed before the whole area had formed.
Let's start this outdoor adventure from Camerata Nuova Village
The Regional Park of the Simbruini Mountains consists of a 30,000 hectares (75,000 acre) territory, here the highest mountains reach 2,100 meters (6890 feet). Due to the size of the reserve, there are many different accesses to the park located in several villages in Lazio: Cervara di Roma, Filettino, Vallepietra, Jenne, Camerata Nuova, Subiaco, and Trevi nel Lazio.
In this article we will discover one of the paths starting from Camerata Nuova, a little village about 50 km (31 miles) from Rome.
Once you get nearby the big fountain in the picture you will easily find a dirt track leading to many enchanting spruce wood. During your hike through the woods you will find some white and red signs on the trunks of the trees and the rocks helping you to follow the right track.
Enjoy an astonishing panorama of the Simbruini Mountains!
After a 40 minute walk you will reach a little old church and a resting area. From this beautiful spot you will enjoy an astonishing view of the Simbruini Mountains.
This little church is near the ruins of Camerata Vecchia, an abandoned village blazed by a devastating fire in 1859, that you can visit! Explore these two areas, and enjoy their astonishing landscapes!
Live an exciting experience admiring nature and wild animals
During your walk through this natural park you will see road signs indicating the names of different areas, and the time you need to reach them.
Once you have visited Camerata Vecchia you can continue your journey in nature by enjoying the next spot: Camposecco. Follow the road sign and get ready for another beautiful landscape.
Camposecco is a mostly flat territory where you can enjoy the sun lying on the ground and admiring a wide variety of flora and fauna. In the picture above you can see some wild horses eating grass and drinking from a puddle. It’s not rare to see them grazing freely across the reserve.
Here you can also find: foxes, wild cats, wild boars, martens, the golden eagle, and many others.

There are no pictures that can really illustrate all the nuances of colors that you will see in your walk through these spruce woods. Here all the tonalities of red, yellow, and brown are developed majestically, leaving you breathless.
After a few minutes of walking into the the woods you will find a river where you can refresh yourself in its cold water.
